April 13: Day 1 of my fast, day 777 of our chain.

If I hadn’t already started a fasting chain 777 days ago, I would have started it today.

Then, and now, special events that should have invited better behavior than usual – first the visit of a US President and now Ram Navmi – became triggers for unprovoked aggression by lumpen Hindutvavadis against Indian Muslims.

In both cases, Kapil Mishra made rabble rousing speeches, the police stood by, Modi stayed silent, and the carnage of innocent Muslims by bloodthirsty Hindutva goons followed.

In both cases, the pliant mainstream media turned a blind eye to the aggressors, while shining the spotlight on the slightest attempt at self-defence by the Muslims community, painting them as terrorists. Victim blaming by turning reality upside down.

In both cases, the whole diverse, multifaceted, patriotic Muslim community was reduced to an artificially maligned religious identity. Turned into unwanted outsiders in their own country.

I am ashamed. I am pained. I am outraged.
These acts will not be forgotten. I stand with my Muslim brothers and sisters as Hindu fanatics put them through the darkest days of their lives, and “moderate Hindus” look away.

Apr 8: Day 1 of my fast, day 772 of our chain.

अहमदशाह अब्दाली के सामने इब्राहिम गर्दी लाया गया। अहमदशाह ने पूछा-‘तुम मराठों की दस पल्टनों के जनरल थे ? उससे पहले तुम फ्रांसीसियों के नौकर थे ? तुमने फिरंगी ज़बान भी पढ़ी है ?
गार्दी नें जवाब दिया ‘जी हां।’
मुसलमान होकर फिरंगी ज़बान पढ़ी! फिर मराठों की नौकरी की!!
क्या तुम नमाज़ पढ़ते हो ?
हमेशा; पांचों वक्त ।
अहमदशाह के चेहरे पर व्यंग भरी मुस्कराहट आई और आँखों में वध की क्रूरता। बोला, ‘फिरंगी या मराठी ज़बान में नमाज़ पढ़ते होगे ! खुदा को राम कहते होगे !’
इब्राहिम ने घावों की पीड़ा दबाते हुये कहा, ‘क्या खुदा अरबी, फ़ारसी या पश्तो ज़बानों को ही समझता है ? क्या वह मराठी या फ्रांसीसी को नहीं जानता ? क्या राम खुदा नहीं है और क्या खुदा राम नहीं है ?’
अब्दाली बोला, ‘क्यों कुफ्र बकता है ? तोबा कर; नहीं तो टुकड़े-टुकड़े कर दिये जायेंगे।’ और अब्दाली ने उसके टुकड़े टुकड़े करके वध करने की आज्ञा दी।

ये कहानी शायद क्लास viii में पढ़ी थी लेकिन आज फिर ये कहानी प्रासंगिक हो गयी जब “आज का अब्दाली” एक माइक लेकर हल्दीराम के रिटेल आउटलेट पर जाता है और नवरात्रि के व्रत में इस्तेमाल किये जाने वाले किसी फ़ूड प्रॉडक्ट के पैकेट पर हिंदी, अंग्रेज़ी के साथ उर्दू में डिटेल लिखे जाने का विरोध करता है, और फिर सोशल मीडिया के अब्दाली ‘बायकॉट हल्दीराम’ का उद्घोष करते हुए लिपि की तलवार से भाषा की हत्या करने में भूल गये कि भाषा का नाम तो हिंदी ही है, जाहे वह किसी लिपि में लिखी जाए, क्योंकि जायसी अपनी अवधी फ़ारसी लिपि में लिखते थे और तुलसी अपनी अवधी नागरी लिपि में।
मेरे पुरखों में ग़ालिब और मीर के साथ सूर, तुलसी और कबीर के नाम भी आते हैं। लिपि के झगड़े में मैं अपनी विरासत और अपनी आत्मा को कैसे भूल जाऊँ न मैं एक लिपि की तलवार से अपने पुरखों का गला काटने को तैयार हूँ और न मैं किसी को ये हक़ देता हूँ कि वह दूसरी लिपि की तलवार से मीर, ग़ालिब और अनीस के गर्दन काटे। आप खुद ही देख सकते हैं कि दोनों तलवारों के नीचे गले हैं मेरे ही बुजुर्गों के।
हमें धर्म की यह ऐनक उतारनी पड़ेगी। इस ऐनक का नंबर गलत हो गया है और अपना देश हमें धुँधला-धुँधला दिखाई दे रहा है। हम हर चीज़ को शक की निगाह से देखने लगे हैं। हम आत्मा को नहीं देखते। वस्त्र में उलझकर रह जाते हैं। वे तमाम शब्द जो हमारी जबानों पर चढ़े हुए हैं, हमारे हैं। फ़ारसी के उन शब्दों को कैसे देश निकाल दे दिया जाय, जिनका प्रयोग मीरा, नानक और तुलसी नें किया है ? ये शब्द हमारे साहित्य में छपे हुए हैं, हमारी संस्कृति के मज़बूत आधार हैं एक ईंट सरकाई गई, तो पूरी इमारत गिर पड़ेगी।✍️Syed Ammar Zaidi

जीवन के आपाधापी में कुछ इस कदर व्यस्त हूँ, कि आज कौन सा दिन , कौन सी तारीख है इसका भी ख्याल नही रहता ..
आज नईम मिला था । मिलते ही चहक कर उसने बताया कि भैया आज महाष्टमी के उपलक्ष्य में मेरे गांव में भजन संध्या का आयोजन है । नईम ने मुझे भजन संध्या और संध्या आरती के लिए व्यक्तिगत रूप से निमंत्रित किया ..

वो, चैत्र नवरात्र पूजा कमिटी का सदस्य भी है ।

ऊपरवाले का शुक्र है, अबतलक हमारा इलाका हिन्दू-मुस्लिम जैसे मुद्दों से कोसों दूर है …

ईद में सैफुद्दीन भैया के बच्चों को कैसा उपहार देना है, इसकी चर्चा जय आज ही कर रही थीं ।

Apr 10: Day 3 of my fast, day 774 of our chain.

कल रामनवमी के अवसर पर जगह जगह धार्मिक रैली निकाली गई और मुस्लिम ठेले वालों,मजारों,मस्जिदों पर खूब हमले हुए… और कई वीडियो में आप देख सकते हैं कि हमले बाकायदे पुलिस की मौजूदगी में हुए…

सच कहूं तो मुझे भगवा आतंकवादियों से कोई शिकायत नहीं, वो ऐसा ही करेंगे ऐसा मेरा पूर्वानुमान था… दहशतगर्द तो दहशत फैलाएगा ही… मुझे शिकायत पुलिस प्रशासन से है… जिन्होंने अपनी सरपरस्ती में ये होने दिया… अगर पुलिस प्रशासन इतना ही नपुंसक है तो फिर ये क्यों पूछता है कि पत्थर क्यों मारा गया… क्रिया की प्रतिक्रिया को कब तक रोक सकते हैं आप…

आप रात दिन नारा लगाते हो कि हिंदुओं एक हो जाओ… सोचो अगर गलती से मुस्लिम एक हो गए तो…. दुनिया में 57 मुस्लिम देश हैं… और संपन्न देश हैं… हर तरह से… तो क्या परिणाम निकलेगा इसका… दिमाग में हमेशा रखना कि भारत के दो प्रमुख व्यापारिक भागीदार देश चीन और संयुक्त अरब अमीरात ही हैं… और चीन फिराक में बैठा है भारत के… अगर यहां गृहयुद्ध शुरू हुआ तो चीन खुलकर हथियार और सेना भेजेगा… याद रखना…

अमेरिका पर फूलना मत, अमेरिका आज तक किसी का नहीं हुआ… अभी देखा न यूक्रेन मसले पर… जो लाशें गिरेंगी वो हिंदू या मुसलमान की नही होंगी, वो सिर्फ भारतीयों की होंगी… इसलिए समय रहते चेत जाइए वरना हिंदू मुस्लिम की लड़ाई में सिर्फ भारत हारेगा और कोई नही….

पहले भी हिंदू महासभा और मुस्लिम लीग के झगड़े से भी नुकसान सिर्फ भारत का हुआ था, और आगे भी हिंदू मुस्लिम झगड़े में नुकसान सिर्फ भारत का ही होगा… अगर आपको देश से प्यार है तो आप हिंदू मुस्लिम संघर्ष को कभी सपोर्ट नहीं कर सकते… और अगर आप इस संघर्ष को सपोर्ट कर रहे हैं तो या तो आप आप भारतीय नही हैं या आप देशभक्त नही हैं….

Apr 7: Day 1 of my fast, day 771 of our chain.

Today, just some random thoughts (sorry for rambling) from a glucose-deprived mind.
Most of my worries circle around Ukraine right now, esp. as we are in Europe at the moment. In my mind, the invasion was driven by the fear of more protests and rising strong democracies. Clear parallels emerge among autocrats, they just don’t understand how masses of people would just protest oftheir own free will. It presents a much larger danger to their power than the imagined ones that they use as a reason to crush civil disobedience (e.g. labeling them as anti-nationals).

A grass-roots fasting chain would likely be even more unimaginable to these autocrats as the personal investment from fasters is rather large. If it grew larger, I am sure the pushback and accusations of being driven by other “agents” would certainly grow. However, the universal appeal of the fast, its inclusiveness and grass-roots origin makes it strong and non-partisan. Here is to keeping this grass roots initiative alive, fasting against fascism and today also against committing atrocities in the name of fighting alleged fascism.

Apr 6: Day 1 of my fast, day 770 of our chain.

The scariest things these days are not the horrific brutalities, the naked lies and the impunity that the powers-that-be get away with it.

The scariest thing is the normalization of it all. To know that a large number of people will find nothing wrong with it all because they are not being targeted directly.

The scariest thing is knowing how many children will grow up never knowing what it means to be true to oneself.
